Historical background and ownership

The château was initially built as a fortified residence for the bishops of Gap, who maintained ownership until the upheavals of the French Revolution. During the turbulent Wars of Religion in the 16th century, the castle suffered significant damage and was looted, necessitating extensive rebuilding efforts in the following centuries. In 1791, the property was confiscated and auctioned off as national property, marking the end of ecclesiastical ownership.

Architectural evolution and features

While the original 12th-century fortress would have featured typical medieval defensive elements such as thick stone walls, battlements, and possibly a moat, much of the current structure reflects later architectural styles due to numerous renovations. The castle's design evolved to incorporate more residential and aesthetic functions, especially during the 19th century when the estate was transformed with English-style gardens, cascades, and an artificial lake.

The gardens and landscape

The château is renowned for its extensive terraced gardens covering approximately 9,000 square meters. These gardens were officially recognized as a 'Remarkable Garden' in 2005. They include a system of fountains, canals, and a diverse collection of flora such as over 1,000 varieties of roses and historic fruit trees. The gardens' design reflects the 19th-century Romantic movement's emphasis on naturalistic landscapes and ornamental horticulture.

Current use and cultural significance

Since 1973, the château has been owned by the city of Gap and serves as the administrative offices for the Écrins National Park. It also hosts the Alpine Plant Conservatory, which contributes to the preservation and study of alpine flora. The site is situated at an altitude of about 1,100 meters and includes surrounding wooded areas and the Gap Canal, enhancing its ecological and recreational value.

The château was partially listed as a historic monument in 1987, recognizing its architectural and historical importance. Its preservation allows visitors to explore both the castle's heritage and its celebrated gardens.
