It was under their patronage that the castle was conceived as a maison de plaisance, or pleasure house, intended as a refined retreat rather than a fortified stronghold.

Between 1785 and 1786, Baron Alphonse Baut de Rasmon commissioned the construction of the castle, entrusting the design to Barnabé Guimard, an architect trained under the renowned Jacques-Ange Gabriel. Guimard's architectural approach drew inspiration from the grandeur of French royal architecture, notably echoing the elegance and balanced proportions of the Petit Trianon at Versailles.
