Its origins date back to at least the mid-12th century, when the site, historically known as Siarchum, was established as a small fortress primarily for defense and strategic control over the surrounding region.

Situated on a commanding hilltop overlooking the town and the valley of the Aranda river, the castle's elevated position was critical for surveillance and military advantage. The fortress's trapezoidal plan, measuring approximately 25 by 30 meters, reflects typical medieval design adapted to the topography, emphasizing both defense and control.

Historical evolution and noble ownership

During the medieval period, the fortress was incorporated into the holdings of the Fernández de Luna family, an influential noble lineage that maintained lordship until 1382. After the Fernández de Luna tenure, ownership passed to the Urrea family, who implemented further modifications reflecting the evolving needs of the time.
