Burg Wissem stands as a remarkable example of a historic water castle located in the town of Troisdorf, Germany. Early history and noble ownership

The earliest recorded mention of the castle, originally named "Wiesheim," dates to 1435, when it was owned by Rembold von Plettenberg. This marks the beginning of a documented lineage of ownership by several noble families, including the von Zweiffel, von Cortenbach, von Landsberg zu Olpe, von Hövel, and von Beust lineages. Each family contributed to the castle's legacy, maintaining it as a noble residence and a symbol of local power and influence. In 1833, the estate passed to Freiherr Clemens von Loë, continuing its role as a significant aristocratic seat.

Transition to public ownership and cultural transformation

In 1939, Burg Wissem underwent a major transition when it was sold to the municipality of Troisdorf. After the upheaval of World War II, the castle was repurposed as the town hall from 1945 until 1981, marking a shift from private noble estate to a center of municipal governance. This period reflects the castle's integration into the civic life of Troisdorf.

Beginning in 1982, the castle embraced a new cultural identity as the home of Europe's only museum dedicated exclusively to picture book art and youth book illustration. This unique institution showcases a diverse collection spanning over a century of artistic styles and developments in children's literature illustration, making Burg Wissem a cultural landmark beyond its architectural significance.

Architectural features and castle layout

Burg Wissem presents as an elongated, rectangular complex with an open western side, a design typical of water castles that originally featured a surrounding moat, portions of which still partially remain today. The castle's defensive layout includes two corner towers positioned diagonally, enhancing its fortified character.

The southern side is dominated by a two-story manor house constructed in the classical style after 1840. Its smooth, plastered façades were preserved through renovations in the mid-1950s, reflecting the architectural tastes of that era. The eastern wing, known as the Remise, dates to around 1550 and is built of rubble stone. This wing has been adapted for contemporary use as an exhibition and concert space, blending historic masonry with modern cultural functions.

The northern and western wings originally featured 18th-century brick constructions, which suffered wartime damage. Reconstruction efforts in 1962 replaced these sections, but the gabled stone portal from 1741 was preserved and incorporated into a new gatehouse, maintaining a tangible link to the castle's 18th-century appearance. Further renovations and expansions between 2010 and 2012 under the Regionale 2010 initiative enhanced the west wing, integrating modern facilities while respecting the castle's historic fabric.

The castle is surrounded by a park featuring a sensory experience field inspired by the educator Hugo Kükelhaus. This innovative outdoor installation includes fourteen stations designed to stimulate and engage various senses, blending education and nature in a unique way. The park enriches the visitor experience by providing an interactive environment that complements the castle’s cultural offerings.

Additionally, the west wing of Burg Wissem serves as the entrance to the adjacent Wahner Heide nature reserve. This facility includes an exhibition area, lecture hall, and information point, linking the castle grounds with the region’s natural heritage and promoting environmental awareness alongside historical appreciation.
