During this time, the local noble family, the von Wanzleben, managed the castle and its affairs until the 14th century.

In 1373, the von Wanzleben family sold the property to Peter Jelito, the Archbishop of Magdeburg. Architectural features from the medieval period

The most striking surviving element from this period is the Romanesque bergfried, a tall, imposing main tower dating from the 13th century. Post-medieval developments and estate expansion

In 1583, the castle complex underwent significant expansion, reflecting evolving architectural styles and the increasing residential requirements of its occupants. Following the devastation of the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648), ownership of Burg Wanzleben passed to the town of Wanzleben. Under municipal control, the site was further developed to include economic and agricultural structures such as a manor house, brewery, granary, and stables. These additions integrated the castle into the local economy and agricultural production, marking a shift from purely defensive functions to a mixed-use estate.

From 1680 until the end of World War II in 1945, the estate was part of the Brandenburg-Prussian domain. During this period, the property was managed by royal tenants, most notably the Kühne family, who oversaw the estate for seven generations. In the 1920s, the Kühne family leased a large area including the castle estate, associated farms named Buch and Blumenberg, and additional lands in the nearby village of Bottmansdorf. This long tenure illustrates the continuity of agricultural use and estate management well into the 20th century.

Adaptive reuse in the modern era

Following the upheavals of World War II and during the era of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), Burg Wanzleben was repurposed as the administrative center for a local Agricultural Production Cooperative (LPG). This reflected the socialist government’s approach to rural land management and collective farming.

After German reunification, descendants of the Kühne family reacquired the castle in 1993. A major reconstruction effort began in 1996, aimed at preserving the castle’s historic fabric while adapting it for contemporary uses. By 2003, the castle complex had been transformed into a multifunctional facility incorporating residential apartments, hospitality services, and conference facilities. This adaptive reuse respects the site’s architectural heritage and ensures its continued relevance in the 21st century.

Burg Wanzleben today offers a unique blend of medieval defensive architecture and early modern residential estate features. Its well-preserved Romanesque bergfried remains a dominant landmark, while the surrounding structures reflect centuries of architectural evolution and changing functional needs.
