The estate has a long history dating back to its first recorded mention in 1326, when it was owned by Absalon Jonsen Ulfeldt. Historical background and ownership

The manor came under the ownership of the Skeel and Sehested families in the 17th century, with the estate serving as their seat from 1759 to 1930. The manor also houses the Museum of North Antiquities, which contains an extensive collection of approximately 10,000 artifacts gathered by the Sehested family, particularly during the ownership of Sehested in 1881.

Archaeological significance

The museum's collection focuses on finds from a radius of about 5 miles (8 km) around the manor, with artifacts dating back to the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. Among the most remarkable discoveries is the Broholm gold hoard, weighing approximately 4.15 kg. This hoard is considered the largest gold hoard from the Migration Period found in Denmark and includes golden bracteates, necklaces, and arm ornaments, highlighting the region's rich prehistoric cultural heritage.

Broholmer dogs and cultural heritage

The estate is also renowned for breeding the Broholmer dog, a national Danish breed belonging to the St. Bernard dog class with short hair and ties to the pedigree of the German Bulldog. These dogs are closely related to the English Mastiff and have become a recognizable presence in Copenhagen neighborhoods. The Copenhagen Kennel Club oversees their breeding and pedigree establishment, with the best specimens bred on the Broholm estate itself.
