This high medieval hill castle was constructed around 1275 on the summit of Chleiflüeli hill, approximately 1 km southwest of Frenkendorf. It served as the seat of a junior branch of the noble Schauenburg family, a prominent lineage in the region during the Middle Ages. The castle's strategic position on a hilltop provided natural defense advantages and commanding views over the surrounding landscape.

Alt-Schauenburg is one of two castles associated with the Schauenburg family near Frenkendorf, the other being Neu-Schauenburg, located to the west. While Neu-Schauenburg was built later, Alt-Schauenburg represents an earlier phase of the family's territorial presence. The castle's construction in the late 13th century reflects typical features of hill castles of that era, designed primarily for defense and residence of the noble family branch.
