Aghamarta Castle is a 12th-century high medieval fortress located near the town of Carrigaline in County Cork, Ireland. Situated in a rural field east of Carrigaline, the castle stands as a modest ruin within the grounds of a school that now occupies the site. Despite its small size, the castle holds significant historical value as a representation of medieval fortifications in this region of Ireland.

Historical background and ownership

The castle was likely constructed in the 12th century, a period marked by Norman expansion and castle-building throughout Ireland. It originally served as a defensive stronghold and residence for local lords. By the late 17th century, ownership of Aghamarta Castle passed from the Earl of Shannon to the Pomeroy family, a notable Anglo-Irish lineage with estates in the region.

In 1824, the castle and its surrounding lands were acquired by the O'Grady family. At this time, the castle was already in a state of significant disrepair. The O'Gradys repurposed much of the castle's stonework for the construction of a new mansion house completed in 1830. This mansion remains on the site and currently functions as a school, integrating the castle ruin into its grounds.

The property changed hands again in 1916, ending the O'Grady family's ownership. The castle ruins have since been preserved as part of the estate's heritage, with the grounds serving as a school garden and recreational area.

Architectural features and condition

The surviving remains of Aghamarta Castle are relatively small but provide insight into 12th-century castle construction in Ireland. The castle likely featured a simple rectangular plan typical of early Norman keeps or tower houses, constructed predominantly from local stone.
