Wynegg Castle

Wynegg Castle is a historic hill castle located in Malans, Switzerland, originally constructed in the 13th century during the High Medieval period. It was built for the noble Wynegg family, with the earliest documented member, Ludwig von Wynegg, appearing in records from 1254. The family's presence is last noted in 1270 with Ulrich von Wynegg. The Wynegg family likely served under the Bishop of Chur or the Freiherr von Vaz, reflecting the feudal allegiances common in the region during this era.

Medieval origins and ownership disputes

Following the extinction of the Wynegg family line, ownership of the castle and its lands passed to the Vaz family. However, the Bishop of Chur also laid claim to the property, leading to legal disputes. Initially, Johann von Vaz accepted the bishop's claim, but in 1299 he contested it in court to assert his legal rights over the fief. The death of the Vaz family in 1337/38 further complicated ownership, as the castle's control became unclear.

On 6 December 1338, Count Ulrich von Montfort pledged to return the castle to his uncle, Friedrich V von Toggenburg. This arrangement was somewhat puzzling, as Friedrich was expected to inherit the castle through his wife, Kunigunde von Vaz. Shortly thereafter, on 11 December 1338, Friedrich officially received the castle as a fief under the authority of the Bishop of Chur. The Toggenburg counts maintained possession of Wynegg Castle along with the regions of Schanfigg and Davos on behalf of the bishops for several decades.

Conflicts and transition in ownership

In 1421, a dispute arose between Frederick VII, the last Count of Toggenburg, and the Bishop of Chur, resulting in the bishop withdrawing the fief. However, arbitration mediated by the city of Zurich reinstated the castle to the count. The death of Frederick VII in 1436 without heirs caused the estate to revert to the bishopric. In 1441, the castle was granted to Junker Heinrich Amsler, after which the castle fades from historical records until the mid-16th century.

Decline and 17th-century reconstruction

By 1548, Wynegg Castle was described as a ruin. Around 1600, the property was acquired by Andreas von Salis, who constructed a new three-story patrician-style residence within the ruins. This reconstruction marked a significant transformation from a medieval fortress to a more residential estate. In 1602, through the marriage of von Salis's daughter Margaretha, ownership passed to the Guler von Davos family, who expanded the house and adopted the name Guler von Wynegg by 1624.

For nearly two centuries, the castle functioned as a country estate for the Guler family. However, by the late 18th century, it was abandoned and left to deteriorate. In 1793, the municipality of Malans purchased the neglected property for 2,200 gulden.

Architectural features and castle site

The ruins of Wynegg Castle are situated on a rocky outcrop north of Malans, characteristic of a hill castle designed for strategic defense. Due to the extensive 17th-century rebuilding, only limited elements of the original medieval structure remain visible today. Notably, parts of the old ring wall, which was up to 2.5 meters thick, still stand. Traces of the original three-story palas can also be discerned.

On the eastern side, facing the mountain, a natural depression was enhanced into a defensive ditch, a typical medieval fortification feature intended to hinder attackers. The 17th-century patrician house built by Andreas von Salis reflects the architectural transition from fortress to residence, showcasing the evolving function of such castles in the post-medieval period.

Historical significance and legacy

Wynegg Castle exemplifies the complex feudal relationships and territorial disputes typical of the High Medieval period in the Swiss region. Its history illustrates the shifting control among noble families, ecclesiastical authorities, and municipal powers. The castle's transformation from a defensive stronghold to a patrician estate mirrors broader social and architectural trends in Switzerland from the medieval era through the early modern period.

Today, the site offers valuable insights into medieval fortification techniques and noble residence architecture. Although largely in ruins, Wynegg Castle remains an important cultural landmark in the canton of Graubünden, reflecting the layered history of regional power and architectural evolution.
