Wolfsberg Castle

The earliest documented mention of the lords of Wolfsberg dates to 1169, with Gozpold de Wolfesperch recorded as a notable figure. From 1244, these lords adopted the castle's name, cementing its identity within the regional aristocracy. By the early 14th century, the castle changed hands to the lords of Egloffstein, a prominent noble family, who are referenced as occupants in documents from 1333 and 1358.

Architectural features and layout

Wolfsberg Castle was constructed as a hill castle, featuring an upper bailey and a lower bailey. Destruction and decline

Wolfsberg Castle endured several episodes of destruction during conflicts. It was first destroyed in 1388 during the South German War of the Cities and rebuilt two decades later under Amtmann Albert of Egloffstein. The Peasants' War of 1525 again left the castle wrecked, prompting reconstruction in 1547 by Philip of Egloffstein. The Thirty Years' War inflicted further damage, with attacks by Swedish forces in 1631 and 1632, followed by assaults from Tilly's cavalry and Bavarian troops in 1633. After these devastations, the castle was never fully restored and gradually fell into ruin.

Later history and current state

In 1803, the castle was seized by the Bavarian state but left unoccupied. It was sold in 1823 to a stonemason named Müller from Brunn, who later transferred ownership to his son-in-law. During this period, much of the castle was dismantled and sold piecemeal, accelerating its decline into the ruins visible today. Presently, the upper bailey is open to the public as a scenic viewpoint, while the lower bailey remains private. The ruins stand as a testament to the castle's medieval origins and its turbulent history through centuries of warfare and political change.
