Wildberg Castle, also known locally as Burg Wildberg or Schloss Wildberg, is a remarkable example of a hill castle with a rich history spanning from the 12th century through the Renaissance and beyond. In 1198, ownership passed to Gundaker II von Steyr, the progenitor of the House of Starhemberg, which has maintained possession of the castle continuously to the present day, making Wildberg the oldest seat still held by this family.

Wildberg Castle’s initial construction reflects typical medieval hill castle architecture, designed to maximize defense on elevated terrain. The castle’s bergfried, a tall round tower dating from the 14th century, stands as a prominent feature. This tower, measuring approximately 27 meters in height with base walls 3.45 meters thick, was built for robust defense and served as a refuge during sieges. The bergfried’s conical roof remains well preserved and is accessible to visitors during public events.

The castle’s location on a hilltop about 598 meters above sea level allowed it to oversee the valley and control the vital trade route. This strategic importance is underscored by an episode in 1394 when Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia, son of Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, was held prisoner within Wildberg’s keep by rebellious nobles allied with the Starhemberg family. His captivity was brief, lasting about a month before his release was secured through the intervention of German princes.

Renaissance transformation and architectural evolution

During the 16th century, Wildberg Castle underwent significant architectural modifications reflecting the prevailing Renaissance style. An arcaded building was constructed between the medieval bergfried and the Gothic sections of the castle, introducing elements of elegance and symmetry characteristic of Renaissance architecture. This addition served to connect the older defensive structures with more comfortable residential spaces.

Further developments occurred in the mid-17th century. After a damaging fire in 1654, restoration efforts included the construction of a new residential palace on the site of the former outer bailey between 1664 and 1665. This palace reflected the evolving tastes and needs of the castle’s noble occupants, blending functional living quarters with stylistic updates.

Castle layout and key structures

The castle complex covers an area of approximately 4,430 square meters, with the main castle occupying about half of this space. The southern, higher part contains the medieval upper castle, which today is partially in ruins. Remnants include sections of the palas (the central residential building), parts of the surrounding ring wall, and the intact bergfried tower.

The northern section, which remains inhabited, features a three-winged building dating back to the 15th century. This section incorporates earlier medieval elements and encloses a trapezoidal courtyard. A notable feature here is the large Gothic gate, which provides access to the castle and is connected to a defensive bridge crossing a deep neck ditch. This ditch served as a protective trench separating the castle from the surrounding landscape.

Historical ownership and preservation efforts

The castle’s ownership history is closely tied to the Starhemberg family. After the original line ended in 1857, ownership passed to the related Schaunberg-Eferdinger branch. Despite challenges such as the collapse of the palace roof in the early 20th century, which led to significant structural damage in the southern part, the castle has remained in private hands.

From the 1970s onward, local heritage groups have advocated for the preservation and restoration of Wildberg Castle. Since 1984, the site has been used for cultural events, and since 2019, the event spaces have been leased to private operators. Although the castle is not generally open to the public, it is accessible during special cultural occasions and is located along the scenic Adalbert Stifter hiking trail.
