Weltenburg Abbey

Weltenburg Abbey is a Benedictine monastery founded in the early 7th century, around 617 AD, making it the oldest monastery in Bavaria. Established by monks of the Hiberno-Scottish mission, including Agilus and Eustace of Luxeuil, students of the influential Irish missionary Columbanus, the abbey holds a significant place in the religious and cultural history of the region. The highlight of this transformation is the abbey church dedicated to Saint George, constructed between 1716 and 1739 by the renowned Asam Brothers, prominent architects and artists of the German Baroque.

The church is celebrated for its elaborate Baroque interior, featuring intricate stucco work, frescoes, and sculptural details that exemplify the period's artistic excellence. The Asam Brothers’ work at Weltenburg Abbey is considered a masterpiece of southern German Baroque architecture, combining dramatic spatial effects with rich decoration to create a deeply spiritual atmosphere.

Secularization and revival

Weltenburg Abbey faced significant challenges during the secularization of Bavaria in 1803, which led to its official dissolution. The abbey’s silver was confiscated, and it was prohibited from accepting new novices. While the abbey brewery and economic buildings were sold, the church and convent buildings remained unsold and were repurposed for local community use, including as a parish house and school.

The abbey’s revival began under the initiative of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who supported its re-foundation as a priory of Metten Abbey in 1842. This marked the start of a restoration period during which the convent was renovated, and properties, including the brewery, were reacquired. Weltenburg regained its status as an independent abbey in 1913 and joined the Bavarian Congregation of the Benedictine Confederation in 1858, reaffirming its religious and cultural significance.

Modern functions and cultural importance

Today, Weltenburg Abbey continues its traditional monastic roles, including hospitality and pastoral care for two parishes. It also engages in farming and adult education, hosting conferences, lectures, and concerts. The abbey is open to the public, except for areas reserved for the monastic community, allowing visitors to experience its rich heritage and spiritual ambiance.

The abbey is also famous for its brewery, Weltenburger Klosterbrauerei, which claims to be one of the oldest monastic breweries in the world, with brewing activities dating back to 1050. This brewery produces the Weltenburger Kloster Barock Dunkel, a beer that has won the World Beer Cup award multiple times as the best Dunkel beer globally. A large restaurant in one wing of the abbey facing the Danube River offers traditional Bavarian cuisine, featuring the abbey’s cheese and beer. During warmer months, guests can enjoy meals in the monastery courtyard’s open-air biergarten.

The abbey complex includes a series of Baroque buildings arranged around a central courtyard, reflecting the typical monastic layout of the era.
