Its recorded history begins in 1481, and by the time of the Count's Feud (1534–1536), it was owned by Stygge Krumpen, the Bishop of Børglum. During the conflict, the castle was seized by Skipper Clement’s peasant army, reflecting the turbulent times. After the Reformation in 1536, the castle was confiscated by the Crown.

In 1578, King Frederick II exchanged the property with Karen Krabbe, who received Voergaard in return for another estate. Karen’s daughter, Ingeborg Skeel, inherited the castle and undertook significant expansions completed by 1588. Ingeborg Skeel is a figure wrapped in legend, reputed for her harshness and cruelty, including the notorious tale of having the castle’s architect thrown into the moat to prevent him from replicating the design elsewhere. Her legacy adds a layer of dark folklore to the castle’s history, including stories of hauntings and a priest’s exorcism following her death.

The art collection was significantly expanded in the 20th century when Ejnar Oberbech-Clausen, a Danish nobleman with ties to French aristocracy, purchased the castle in 1955. He brought with him a vast collection of artworks and antiques from France, including items inherited from his wife’s family. Oberbech-Clausen undertook extensive restoration efforts, preserving both the castle and its treasures for public appreciation. Since his death in 1963, the castle and its collections have been managed by a foundation and opened to visitors.
