Over the centuries, ownership passed through related noble families, including the Ascenso and Samonà lineages, who maintained the castle as a private residence well into the 20th century. By the early 1800s, the castle had transitioned primarily into a summer home for the Samonà family, marking a shift from its original defensive function to a more domestic role.

The castle was part of the feudal estate known as Venetico San Martino Spadafora, associated with prominent noble titles such as the Princes of Venetico and Maletto and the Marchesi of San Martino. Notably, members of the Spadafora family, including Federico Spadafora in 1572 and Federico Spadafora Moncada in 1798, were knights of the Sovereign Order of Malta, linking the castle to this prestigious religious and military order.

Architectural features and layout

The castle’s design features a roughly quadrangular plan fortified by cylindrical towers at each corner, a typical defensive arrangement for late medieval fortifications. The entrance is located on the south side, originally accessed via a staircase that ended in a now-lost drawbridge, underscoring the castle's strategic emphasis on controlled access and defense.

Significant portions of the defensive walls remain intact, particularly on the western side, where two corner towers and segments of the battlements (known locally as cammini di ronda) survive. These battlements served as walkways for guards to patrol and defend the castle perimeter effectively.

East of the main structure lie the ruins of an ancient chapel that once contained a cross symbolizing the Sovereign Order of Malta. This chapel featured a medieval stone portal of notable craftsmanship, both of which were stolen at an unknown time, leaving only fragments behind. The chapel’s existence within the castle grounds reflects the spiritual dimension and the religious affiliations of the castle's noble occupants.

Damage, restoration, and current condition

The castle suffered extensive damage due to the catastrophic 1908 earthquake centered near Messina, which severely affected the structure.
