Tworóg

Tworóg is a village with origins dating back to 1530, initially established as a forge and settlement within the territories of the Bytom and later Toszek duchies. The village became the administrative center for the estates of the Toszek state, reflecting its regional importance in Silesian history.

Historical records from 1679 mention a castle in Tworóg belonging to the noble von Colonn family from Toszek. Although some historians debate the exact location of this original castle, it is generally believed to have stood near the site of the later granary adjacent to the current parish building, rather than on the site of the present palace. This early castle was a bastioned fortress typical of the Renaissance period, designed for defense with angular bastions allowing crossfire coverage, a style that was widespread in Central Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries.

The palace of the hohenlohe-ingelfingen family

The prominent architectural landmark in Tworóg today is the palace of the princes Hohenlohe-Ingelfingen, constructed in the second half of the 18th century. This one-story building faces south and is built on a rectangular plan featuring projecting risalits at the ends and a distinctive central risalit on the front facade, adding depth and emphasis to the structure's design.

The palace has undergone significant renovations, notably in 1802 and again in 1922-23, which have shaped its current appearance. Its architectural style reflects the restrained classicism of the era, with a focus on symmetry and proportion rather than ornate decoration. Despite the uncertainty whether the palace was constructed directly on the site of the earlier castle, it remains the main historical and cultural attraction of Tworóg.

Architectural and historical significance

The original bastioned fortress represented a strategic military architecture style, characterized by angular bastions and thick walls designed to withstand artillery fire and sieges.
