Stara Łomnica

Stara Łomnica castle stands as a significant example of a late medieval tower residence in Poland, with origins tracing back to the early 14th century. The first historical mentions of the village of Stara Łomnica date from 1316, and by 1341, the village was granted by King Charles IV to the noble Pannewitz family. It was likely in the late 14th century that the stone residential tower, which forms the core of the castle complex, was constructed, serving as the seat for one branch of the Pannewitz lineage. This tower symbolizes both the defensive needs and the social status of a less affluent knightly family during the medieval period.

Historical background and ownership

The castle's history is closely tied to the Pannewitz family, who maintained possession of the estate until 1815. The earliest documented use of the local name "von der Lomnicz" dates to 1409, when Konrad, son of Wolfram Pannewitz, signed his name with this designation. The continuity of ownership by a single family over several centuries highlights the castle's role as a stable noble residence rather than a military fortress.

Architectural features of the tower

Structure and layout

The primary feature of the castle is its stone tower, built on a slight elevation to dominate the surrounding landscape. The tower has a rectangular plan measuring approximately 10.7 by 12.8 meters and rises to four stories. This verticality provided both security and status. The ground floor, about 6 meters high, consisted of a single large chamber with a pointed arch entrance directly from the courtyard. This level was illuminated by four narrow slit windows and one small pointed-arch window, indicating its use for storage or economic activities rather than habitation.

Upper floors and living quarters

The first floor, accessed by a separate entrance likely reached by wooden stairs, served as a large representative hall or great chamber. This floor featured large rectangular windows, allowing more light and comfort, and had a ceiling height of about 4.4 meters. The second floor contained two living chambers, as evidenced by the remains of two latrines, suggesting these rooms were used for personal accommodation. These chambers were probably separated by a wooden partition and had wide windows to provide daylight. The third floor had smaller windows only on the southern side, but due to later alterations, the original roof structure and the tower's crowning feature remain unknown.

Later expansions and renovations

In the 15th century, a rectangular residential building was added to the east side of the tower, expanding the living space. During the 16th century, this addition was rebuilt into a Renaissance manor, reflecting the architectural trends of the period. A curtain wall was also constructed on the west side, enlarging the original courtyard and enhancing the defensive perimeter.

After a fire in 1617, the ground floor was remodeled by inserting a ceiling at half the height, dividing the space into two levels. Further renovations occurred in 1897 and 1935, including the installation of the current shed roof on the tower, as well as replacement of floors and stairs. These updates helped preserve the structure while adapting it for continued use.

Current status and significance

Today, the tower remains in well-preserved condition and is privately owned. It stands as a valuable architectural and historical monument, illustrating the lifestyle and defensive architecture of a modest noble family in medieval Poland. The castle complex, combining medieval defensive elements with Renaissance residential features, offers insight into the evolution of small noble estates over several centuries.
