The castle was first documented in the 11th century, during the high medieval period. Its earliest known owner was Gozelon de Montaiqude, who is recorded in association with the castle due to a dispute involving the plundering of property from the Abbey of Saint Hubert. Following Gozelon's death, his widow made a significant gesture by offering the castle to the abbey as an act of penance, illustrating the intertwined relationship between feudal lords and religious institutions during the medieval era.

Architectural development in the 14th century

By the early 14th century, the castle underwent expansion under the ownership of Jean de Bohême, who added a tower to the existing structure. This addition reflects the typical medieval practice of fortifying residences with defensive towers to enhance security and status. In 1461, the castle passed into the hands of the Hamal family, who maintained ownership for over three centuries until 1774. 18th and 19th century rebuildings

Lord Charles de Favereau significantly altered the castle by demolishing the original Hamal family residence and constructing a new country home made of bricks on its foundations. Unfortunately, this renovation led to the loss of the medieval structures, as none of the original castle fabric survived this phase.

Later, in 1877, Louise Marie Eulalie, a relative of Baron Victor Albert de Favereau, inherited the property. She initiated another major transformation by demolishing the brick mansion and erecting the present castle in 1888. This reconstruction embraced the neo-Gothic architectural style, a revivalist movement popular in the 19th century that sought to evoke medieval Gothic aesthetics through pointed arches, decorative tracery, and steeply pitched roofs.

20th century wartime roles and modern use

During World War I, the castle was owned by the De Vaux family and was repurposed as a hospital. This military use led to the destruction of some outbuildings, marking a period of damage and adaptation to wartime needs.

In World War II, particularly during the Battle of the Bulge, the castle was occupied by American soldiers, further embedding it in the region's wartime history.

Following the war, the castle served recreational purposes and experienced a period of vacancy lasting five years. In 1979, it was purchased by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The society undertook restoration efforts to preserve the castle and adapted it for their community's use.

Today, Petite-Somme Castle remains owned and inhabited by members of the Hare Krishna movement. It is accessible to visitors for a small fee, offering guided tours that highlight both the castle's architecture and the spiritual practices of its current residents.
