The origins and historical significance of Nakijin Castle

Nakijin Castle became the political and military center of the Hokuzan Kingdom after the Aji consolidated power in the region. This kingdom was one of three principalities during Okinawa's Sanzan period, alongside Chuzan and Nanzan.

In the early 15th century, specifically in 1416, the Chuzan Kingdom conquered the Hokuzan Kingdom, bringing Nakijin Castle under its control. Following this conquest, the Chuzan rulers appointed a governor to oversee the castle and surrounding lands. This governor was Lord Gosamaru, reputed to be a descendant of the original Aji lords who had built the fortress, thereby maintaining a link to the castle's founding lineage.

Architectural features and design

Nakijin Castle is renowned for its impressive limestone walls, which are skillfully constructed without mortar, a technique characteristic of Okinawan gusuku (castle) architecture. The walls form a series of enclosures and terraces that follow the natural contours of the hill, creating a complex and defensible layout.

Later, Nakijin Castle continued to function as an administrative site under the Ryukyu Kingdom, although its military importance diminished over time. The castle suffered damage during various conflicts, including battles in the 15th century and later periods.

Preservation and cultural recognition

In 2000, Nakijin Castle was designated as part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site known as the "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu." This recognition highlights its cultural and historical significance alongside other notable sites like Shuri Castle.
