This castle, with origins dating back to the mid-13th century, represents a significant example of a late medieval stronghold in the region. Its history is closely tied to the noble Léotoing family, who were the original lords of Montgon and played a crucial role in the castle's development.

Early history and origins

The earliest known mention of Montgon Castle appears around 1250, during which time it likely existed as a modest fortification. The Léotoing family, prominent local lords, held the lordship of Montgon and oversaw the castle’s initial construction. At this stage, the structure was probably a simple defensive site, typical of early medieval fortifications designed to control the surrounding territory and assert feudal authority.

Expansion and architectural development in the 14th century

By the late 14th century, the lordship of Léotoing-Montgon had expanded significantly. It was during this period that the original fortification was likely replaced or substantially rebuilt to form the castle that largely defines the site today.
