Around 1433-1436, the castle began to shift from a purely military fortress to a more comfortable residence. This is evidenced by the construction of a new main entrance portal completed in 1491, replacing the original austere military gate with one better suited for noble inhabitants and visitors.

Renaissance transformation and architectural features

The Renaissance period brought a wave of architectural enhancements that softened the castle’s martial character and introduced elements of refinement and domestic comfort. A notable addition was the loggia, an external covered gallery supported by columns, typical of Renaissance noble residences. The castle’s role evolved further, serving as a storage facility for wine, which was an important local product, and adapting to the logistical needs of the era.

Architectural modifications during the Grison period included the construction of a new eastern entrance designed to accommodate horse-drawn carriages, reflecting the increasing importance of accessibility and transportation. This entrance replaced the original western gate and signaled the castle’s shift from a fortress to a multifunctional noble estate.

After the end of Grison rule in 1797 and the reintegration of Valtellina into the Duchy of Milan, the castle passed into the hands of the Guicciardi family. Eventually, the Guicciardi family donated the castle to the state. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Masegra Castle was repurposed for military use once again, serving as barracks and later as the headquarters for the local military district until the 1980s.
