Martainville Castle, also known as Château de Martainville, is a remarkable example of a Renaissance manor house located in the village of Martainville-Épreville, within the Seine-Maritime department of Normandy, France. Unlike many castles built for military defense, Martainville was constructed primarily as a residence for a wealthy merchant family, reflecting the social and economic shifts of the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

The castle was built between 1495 and 1505 by Jacques Le Pelletier, a prosperous shipowner and merchant from Rouen. His family belonged to the affluent upper-middle class, which was gaining prominence during this period. During the 17th century, the castle was under the lordship of Louis Le Pelletier de Martainville, who resided primarily at the royal court in Versailles. Despite his absence, he maintained significant revenues through agricultural activities on the castle's lands, illustrating the economic foundations of noble estates during this period.

The castle remained in the Le Pelletier family until 1757, when the last heir died without issue. Subsequently, the property passed through various families by inheritance, reflecting the common fate of many such estates in France. The castle suffered damage during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, a conflict that affected many historic sites across the region.

Decline, restoration, and current use

By the early 20th century, Martainville Castle had fallen into a state of disrepair. In 1905, it was sold for the first time outside the family to a cattle merchant who intended to dismantle the property. Fortunately, the French State intervened and purchased the castle in 1906, preventing its destruction.

Since then, the castle has undergone significant restoration efforts to preserve its architectural integrity and historical significance.
