Manyas Castle

Manyas Castle, locally known as Manyas Kalesi, is a notable medieval fortress located south of the village of Soğuksu in the Balıkesir province of Turkey. This Byzantine castle crowns a small mountain, commanding strategic views of the surrounding landscape. It occupies the site of the ancient Greek town of Poimanenon or Poemanemum, whose ruins were repurposed as building materials during the castle's construction, evident in the incorporation of columns, pedestals, and other spolia within the surviving walls.

Historical background and significance

The origins of Manyas Castle trace back to the Byzantine period, with construction primarily in the 14th century during the late medieval era. The castle played a significant role in the turbulent history of the region. In 1204, it fell under the control of the Latin Empire following the Fourth Crusade, when Frankish forces seized the fortress. However, it was likely recaptured by the Byzantines after the nearby Battle of Poimanenon in 1223/1224. This battle was a decisive victory for John III Doukas Vatatzes, Emperor of Nicaea, against the brothers Alexios and Isaac Laskaris, who had allied with Latin forces to contest his succession after the death of their father, Theodore I Laskaris.

By 1337, Manyas Castle came under the control of the Ottoman Empire. Over the subsequent centuries, the fortress gradually fell into disuse and ruin, reflecting the shifting political and military landscape of the region.

Architectural features and ruins

The present remains of Manyas Castle include the ruins of several wall towers and curtain walls, which once formed a defensive perimeter atop the mountain. The use of spolia from the ancient Greek town is a distinctive feature, with fragments of classical columns and pedestals embedded in the masonry. This reuse of materials not only reflects the practical considerations of medieval builders but also provides a tangible link to the site's ancient past.

Recently, one of the castle's towers has collapsed, with parts tumbling down the mountain slope, indicating the fragile state of the ruins. Despite this, the castle remains accessible to visitors and offers a compelling glimpse into the region's layered history.

Opposite the castle, on a neighboring hill, lie the ruins of a small Ottoman mausoleum and mosque, dating from the early 14th century.
