Manavi Castle

Manavi Castle is a high medieval fortress situated atop a mountain near the village of Manavi in the Sagarejo municipality within the Kakheti region of Georgia. This strategic location provided a commanding view of the surrounding landscape, essential for defense and early warning against invaders. The castle's position, combined with the nearby Chailuri Castle, formed a defensive barrier protecting the route to Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia.

Historical background and royal connections

The origins of Manavi Castle date back to the 10th or 11th century, placing its construction firmly in the high medieval period. While the early history of the castle remains largely undocumented, it is known that by the early 18th century, the fortress had fallen into ruin. In this era, David II of Kakheti undertook the construction of a palace within the castle grounds, utilizing the remains of the older structure. This renovation marked a significant revival of the site.

In 1712, the castle became the setting for the marriage of Teimuraz II of Kakheti and Tamar of Kartli. Following their union, the couple established Manavi as their residence. It is also believed that their son, Erekle II of Georgia, who would later become a prominent king, spent his childhood within the castle walls. These royal associations underscore the castle's importance in Georgian history during the early modern period.

Architectural features and layout

The castle exhibits an irregular ground plan adapted to the mountainous terrain on which it stands. This layout is typical for hill castles designed to maximize natural defenses. On the eastern side of the fortress lies a bailey, an enclosed courtyard that would have served various functional purposes including military drills, storage, and domestic activities.

Within the inner castle, the palace once stood, although no significant remains of this structure survive today. However, the site retains three small churches, which are notable for their architectural and historical value. These churches reflect the religious practices of the castle's inhabitants and contribute to the cultural heritage of the site.

Additionally, the presence of stone coffin-like gravestones is a distinctive feature of the castle grounds. These gravestones are typical of the region and period, providing insights into burial customs and the social status of those interred.

Defensive elements

The castle's elevated position and rugged terrain provided natural fortification. The irregular shape of the walls was likely designed to conform to the mountain's contours, enhancing defense against siege warfare. Although much of the original fortifications have not survived intact, the strategic placement of Manavi Castle alongside Chailuri Castle created a formidable obstacle to any advancing enemy forces targeting Tbilisi.

Current condition and visitor experience

Today, Manavi Castle stands as a ruin accessible to visitors interested in Georgian medieval architecture and history. The site is open to the public without restrictions, though reaching it requires either a 4WD vehicle or a hike due to its mountainous location.

Visitors are drawn to the castle not only for its historical significance but also for the panoramic views it offers of the Kakheti landscape. The surviving churches and gravestones provide tangible links to the past, making Manavi Castle a notable destination for cultural tourism in eastern Georgia.
