Lauriat Castle, also known as Château de Lauriat, is a medieval fortress located northwest of the village of Beaumont in the Haute-Loire department of France. This castle is a significant example of High Medieval fortifications in the region, with origins dating back to the early 2nd millennium. The earliest known mention of a fortification at Lauriat is from the year 1000 AD, although the surviving structures primarily date from the 13th century.

Historical background and ownership lineage

The castle's history reflects the typical feudal transitions of medieval France. Initially established as a defensive stronghold, Lauriat Castle became a noble residence over the centuries. In the 15th century, it was under the ownership of the Rochefort d'Ally family, a notable lineage in the region. Around 1480, the castle passed to the Saint Ahond family through marriage, illustrating the common practice of property transfer via dynastic alliances.

By 1575, ownership shifted again to the Pélacot family, also through marital ties. This family maintained possession until the early 17th century, when Marie de Pélacot, the Lady of Lauriat, married Charles de Gouzel around 1640. The Gouzel family retained the castle for over a century, up until the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century.
