La Rivière Castle, known locally as Château de la Rivière, is a historic medieval fortress situated near the village of Saint Jean-de-Daye in the Manche department of Normandy, France. The castle's origins date back to the late 11th century, with its initial construction attributed to Odon de Carteville, the half-brother of William the Conqueror, around the year 1090. Originally, the castle stood at the sea front, commanding strategic views and control over the surrounding coastal area.

Medieval origins and early history

La Rivière Castle was built during the High Medieval period, reflecting the military and residential architecture of the time. The castle served as a fortified stronghold for the noble family of La Rivière and played a role in the feudal landscape of Normandy during the 12th and 13th centuries. By the end of the 13th century, the castle was under the lordship of Geoffroy de Montenay, who is recorded for his patronage of the nearby priory of Saint-Fromond. He granted the monks the revenue of 20 tournaments to fund the construction of a private chapel within the castle grounds, indicating the castle's dual role as both a military fortress and a noble residence with religious functions.

Ownership through the centuries

The castle remained in the hands of the Montenay family until 1462, when it was sold to Christophe de Cerisay. Over the following centuries, the castle changed ownership several times, reflecting the shifting fortunes of French nobility. From 1698, the castle became the property of the d'Argouges family, who maintained it for several generations. The last noble occupant was the princess of Montmorency-Luxembourg, baroness of Hommet la Rivière, who resided there in 1818. Subsequent owners were private individuals, and the castle gradually fell into decline.

Architectural features and current condition

While much of La Rivière Castle is now in ruins, its remaining structures provide insight into its medieval architecture. The castle originally featured typical defensive elements such as thick stone walls, battlements, and possibly a given its coastal location. By the late 20th century, the castle had become a ruin and was repurposed as a campsite for naturists under the management of the Camping Club de France. This unusual phase in the castle's history left behind traces of modern use amidst the ancient stonework. The campsite was closed around 2002, and since then the ruins have become heavily overgrown, adding to the site's secluded and undiscovered atmosphere.
