Kollnburg Castle, known locally as Burgruine Kollnburg, is a notable medieval hill castle ruin located in the village of Kollnburg in the Bavaria region of Germany. This castle, perched strategically on elevated terrain, reflects the turbulent history of Bavarian nobility and warfare from the High Middle Ages through the early modern period.

Early origins and medieval ownership

The castle was first documented in 1153, placing its origins firmly in the high medieval era, although the existing metadata lists its main construction as renaissance and built in the 17th century. This discrepancy arises because the castle's initial establishment and core structures date back to the 12th century, but significant rebuilding and modifications occurred later. It was originally constructed by the Lords of Kalmberg, a noble family who established their seat here to control the surrounding lands.

In 1363, ownership transferred to the Lords of Nussberg, who served as ministerials to the Counts of Bogen. Ministerials were unfree knights or officials who managed estates for their lords, indicating Kollnburg's importance in regional feudal administration.

Destruction and rebuilding: the böckler war and thirty years' war

The castle's history was marked by conflict, notably during the Böckler War of 1468-69, an uprising of Bavarian knights against Duke Albert IV of Bavaria's policies. During this conflict, Kollnburg Castle was burned down. However, it was subsequently rebuilt, demonstrating its strategic and symbolic importance.

Later, in the 17th century, during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), the castle suffered destruction once again. This war devastated much of Central Europe, and many castles were destroyed or abandoned. Kollnburg was destroyed during this period and was never rebuilt, leading to its gradual decline and abandonment in the following century.

Architectural features and current condition

Today, the most prominent surviving feature of Kollnburg Castle is its 11-meter-high keep, with walls approximately 2 meters thick. The keep, a central fortified tower typical of medieval castles, served as the last line of defense and the lord's residence. It has been repurposed as a lookout tower, offering visitors panoramic views of the surrounding Bavarian landscape.

Following the castle's auction in 1817, the remains of the lower structures were dismantled by a local brewer and used to construct a nearby rectory. This reuse of building materials was common in post-medieval periods when castles lost their military significance.

The castle ruins are classified as a hill castle and are currently well preserved in terms of the keep, while other parts remain in ruinous condition. The site is freely accessible to the public, providing a quiet and evocative glimpse into medieval Bavarian fortifications.
