The castle's remains, alongside those of a 16th-century manor house, mark the site of a once formidable defensive residence. This castle was strategically positioned close to a stream and a small but deep ravine, which historically served as natural defensive features, enhancing the castle's protection against potential attackers.

Architectural features and layout

The primary structure of Kilbirnie Castle is a robust 15th-century tower house measuring approximately 42 feet by 33 feet. The walls are notably thick, ranging from 7 to 8 feet, indicative of its defensive purpose. The tower rose to four storeys, with a cellar and a sleeping loft located beneath vaulted ceilings. The castle's design includes a vaulted hall, illuminated by three windows on the south wall and a high window on the north wall, which would have provided natural light to the main living and gathering areas.

One of the more grim architectural features is the starving pit prison located in the north-west corner of the tower. This small dungeon was accessed via a hatch from a passage connected to the stair at loft level, illustrating the defensive and punitive measures employed within the castle. Adjacent to the keep on the north-eastern side are ruins that likely represent the remains of an oven and kitchen buildings, essential for the castle's domestic functions.
