Kerelaw Castle

Kerelaw Castle stands as a significant medieval ruin located in Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland. Dating back to around 1191, this castle was originally held by the Lockhart family under the grant from Richard de Morville, Constable of Scotland. The early history of the castle is closely tied to the Lockharts, with Stephen Lockhart (or Loccard) receiving land in Ayrshire that included this strategic stronghold. The castle's location in Ayrshire placed it at the heart of local power struggles and noble family rivalries that shaped the region's medieval history.

Historical ownership and feudal conflicts

Following the Lockharts, Kerelaw Castle passed into the hands of the Campbells of Loudoun and subsequently the Cunninghames of Kilmaurs. The Cunninghames were a prominent Ayrshire family involved in a long-standing feud with the Montgomeries, another powerful local clan. This feud culminated in 1488 when the castle was sacked and burned by the 2nd Lord Montgomerie. This violent episode is a key event in the castle's history, reflecting the turbulent nature of Scottish noble relations during the Late Medieval period.

Reconstruction and architectural features

After the destruction in 1488, Kerelaw Castle was rebuilt, although it never fully regained its former prominence. The castle reportedly incorporated carved coats of arms taken from Kilwinning Abbey, indicating a connection to local ecclesiastical art and heraldry. The surviving ruins today include three walls in varying states of decay. Notably, the southern wall retains Gothic windows believed to have been inspired by those at Kilwinning Abbey, demonstrating the influence of ecclesiastical Gothic architecture on the castle's design.

Architectural style and layout

Kerelaw Castle is characteristic of a High Medieval fortress with adaptations reflecting later medieval styles. The Gothic windows suggest an architectural evolution influenced by the religious structures nearby. The castle's layout would have included defensive walls, living quarters, and possibly a courtyard, typical of Scottish castles of this era. Though much of the structure is now ruined, the remaining walls provide insight into the castle's original scale and defensive capabilities.

Social and economic aspects

Historical records from 1545 reveal interesting social arrangements connected to the castle. Nine fishermen from Saltcoats were granted leases in exchange for transporting the Earl's furniture between Kerelaw and Finlayston on the Clyde twice yearly. This arrangement illustrates the castle's role as a noble residence with seasonal movements and the integration of local communities into its economic life. Additionally, a yearly provision of a half barrel of herrings was required, highlighting the castle's reliance on local resources and the reciprocal relationships between the nobility and common folk.

Current condition and heritage significance

Today, Kerelaw Castle exists as a ruin, with only three walls surviving. The site offers valuable insights into medieval Scottish castle construction, feudal history, and architectural influences.
