Kaštilac Castle

Kaštilac Castle, located in the town of Kaštel Gomilica within the Split-Dalmatia County of Croatia, is a notable example of Renaissance military architecture along the Adriatic coast. Constructed in the early 16th century, this fortress played a significant role in the defensive network established by local landowners and religious institutions to protect their estates and populations from the advancing Ottoman Empire.

Historical context and strategic importance

Following the fall of Bosnia to the Ottoman Empire in 1463, the Dalmatian coast, then under the control of the Venetian Republic, faced increasing threats of Ottoman raids and invasions. In response, a series of fortifications were commissioned along the coast of the Kaštela Bay, between the towns of Trogir and Split. Over several decades, local landowners including the Split Archbishopric, monasteries, and nobles from nearby cities constructed 17 fortifications and fortified 12 villages to safeguard their communities and agricultural lands.

Kaštilac Castle was one of these key fortifications, built specifically by the Benedictine nuns of the St. Rainerio nunnery in Split between 1529 and 1537. The castle was uniquely situated on an underwater sea rock approximately 40 meters from the shoreline, enhancing its defensive capabilities by controlling access from the sea and protecting the adjacent village.

Architectural features and layout

The castle features a rectangular ground plan surrounded by crenelated defensive walls designed for active defense. These walls were equipped with a wooden walkway along the top, allowing defenders to patrol and repel attackers. Access to the castle was controlled via a machicolated gate tower, a common Renaissance defensive element that allowed defenders to drop projectiles or boiling substances on attackers below. This tower was reached by crossing a stone bridge and a drawbridge, both critical for controlling entry and exit.

Inside, the castle served as a refuge for 17 families who had fled their original village of Kozice after it was destroyed in a Turkish raid. This residential aspect highlights the castle’s dual role as both a military fortification and a protected community settlement.

Development and changes over time

In the latter half of the 17th century, a fortified village was constructed on the mainland near the castle, expanding the defensive network and providing additional safety for local inhabitants. This development reflects the ongoing need for protection against Ottoman incursions during this turbulent period.

By the early 20th century, the area in front of Kaštilac Castle was filled in to create a public square, altering the original maritime setting of the fortress. However, in the mid-20th century, efforts were made to restore the castle’s historic character by reopening the square and reconstructing the stone bridge that connects the castle to the mainland.

Modern significance and cultural role

Today, Kaštilac Castle functions as a small residential neighborhood, preserving its historical fabric while serving contemporary needs. It remains accessible to visitors who wish to explore its architecture and history, although the presence of tourists is sometimes met with mixed feelings by the local residents.

The castle also gained international recognition as a filming location for the HBO series Game of Thrones, where it represented the Free City of Braavos. This exposure has contributed to increased interest and tourism, highlighting the castle’s striking visual appeal and well-preserved Renaissance features.
