Its strategic location was chosen to oversee and guard vital road connections stretching from west to east, a role it fulfilled since its construction in the 12th century during the Staufer period. Origins and early history

Built as a high medieval fortress, Kapfenburg Castle was a significant military and administrative center during the reign of the Hohenstaufen dynasty.
