It was originally owned by the prominent Bocholtz family, who maintained possession until the end of the 18th century.

The assault resulted in the castle being set on fire, causing significant damage. During this attack, Jelis Bocholtz, a member of the owning family, was taken prisoner. Following the liberation of Jelis Bocholtz, reconstruction efforts began promptly. Notably, parts of the castle's lower main building date back to 1544, indicating that some original structures survived the attack and were incorporated into the rebuilt castle.

Architectural features and changes

Ingenhoven Castle was originally situated on a small artificial islet, a common defensive feature in castle design, which enhanced its protection by surrounding it with water. It was connected by a bridge to the now-lost Haus Lobberich mansion. Over time, as the mansion disappeared, the castle's moats were filled in, altering the castle's immediate landscape and defensive characteristics.
