Built between 1896 and 1899 by New York photographer E. Starr Sanford, the castle was originally conceived as a luxurious honeymoon cottage and summer residence. The Parks family maintained ownership of the castle for approximately 70 years, during which time it served as a private residence and a symbol of family heritage.

In 1985, the city of Danbury acquired Hearthstone Castle along with the nearby Tarrywile Mansion, integrating the properties into the public park system. Since this acquisition, the castle has fallen into a state of disrepair, with its interiors largely ruined and the structure fenced off to prevent public access for safety reasons.

Preservation challenges and recent developments

The castle's condition has deteriorated over the decades due to natural weathering and lack of maintenance. In 2008, the site suffered from vandalism when several teenagers were arrested after posting videos of their destructive activities inside the castle on social media, highlighting the challenges of protecting abandoned historic properties.

Recognizing the castle's cultural and historical value, the city approved a plan in 2016 to transform the abandoned structure into a walled garden, aiming to preserve the site in a new form that would allow public enjoyment while maintaining safety and honoring the castle's legacy.
