Haute Roche Castle

Haute Roche Castle, also known locally as Château de Haute Roche or Château de Dourbes, is a striking medieval ruin situated near the village of Dourbes in the municipality of Viroinval, within the province of Namur in Belgium's Wallonia region. Its name means "High Rock," aptly describing its commanding position atop a roughly 50-meter-high rocky promontory overlooking the valley of the Viroin river. This elevated location provided a strategic vantage point controlling the surrounding landscape and river valley.

The site of Haute Roche Castle has a long history of occupation, with archaeological evidence indicating use dating back to the Gallo-Roman period. In the early 16th century, reflecting the changing nature of warfare, the castle underwent significant fortification upgrades. A new gatehouse was constructed along with an advanced defensive wall designed to withstand artillery fire, a response to the increasing use of gunpowder weapons in siege warfare.

In 1554, Haute Roche Castle was besieged and captured by the forces of Anne de Montmorency, the constable of France, acting on behalf of King Henri II of France. This siege was part of a wider conflict in the region, with many fortifications targeted and taken during this period. The following year, in 1555, William of Orange, known as "the Silent," reconquered the area. During this campaign, he ordered the dismantling of Fagnolles Castle, and it is believed that Haute Roche suffered a similar fate, leading to its decline and ruin.

Since then, the castle has remained a ruin, with much of its structure lost to time but still offering a glimpse into medieval fortification techniques and regional history.
