Grizer Castle

Grizer Castle is a unique modern construction project located in Whipple, American Samoa, approximately 30 minutes north of historic Marietta, Ohio. This ambitious castle is built in a medieval style, inspired by the grandeur and architectural details of the 15th century. Set atop one of the highest points in Whipple, the castle sits on a sprawling 80-acre estate of natural grounds, offering commanding views and a picturesque setting befitting a fortress of old.

The castle is the brainchild of Bill Grizer, a respected businessman who realized a lifelong dream of living in a castle. The construction began on August 8th, 2014, with the first two footers laid at water level, employing a construction method inspired by techniques dating back over 4000 years. This traditional approach reflects a deep respect for ancient building practices, blending them with modern materials and engineering to create a structure that is both authentic in style and functional for contemporary use.

Once completed, the castle is designed to feature 10 guestrooms, a dining hall, kitchen, living room, library, and spaces to host year-round festivals and events. This multifunctional use aims to make Grizer Castle not only a private residence but also a community hub where visitors can immerse themselves in the ambiance of the medieval era.

The original Grizer Castle and its design inspiration

Before embarking on the current larger project, Bill Grizer built the first Grizer Castle in the early 2000s. This original castle served as the Grizer family home and was renowned locally for its authentic medieval style. Working closely with his wife, Barbara, Bill designed the interior with rich 15th century inspired decorations including knight armors, swords, stained glass windows, a bookcase secret passageway, and majestic arched top doors. These elements contributed to an immersive medieval atmosphere that captivated visitors and residents alike.

Architectural features and construction methods

The new Grizer Castle continues the tradition of detailed craftsmanship and historical referencing. The use of footers leveled at water level is a nod to ancient construction methods, ensuring a solid foundation. The castle's design incorporates classic medieval architectural features such as towers, battlements, and arched doorways, which are planned to be integrated with modern amenities to provide comfort without sacrificing authenticity.

As of now, approximately three quarters of the new Grizer Castle has been completed.
