Gravenwezel Castle, locally known as Kasteel 's-Gravenwezel, is a historic fortified residence situated east of the village of the same name in the province of Antwerp, within the Flemish region of Belgium. This castle has a rich history dating back to the late medieval period, with its origins tied to the strategic defense of the city of Antwerp.

Medieval origins and early history

The exact identity of the original builder of Gravenwezel Castle remains unknown. However, the castle was established as part of a defensive line protecting Antwerp, a major medieval city. During the early Middle Ages, the territory of 's-Gravenwezel was a fief under the jurisdiction of the land of Breda. In 1287, the castle and its lands became the property of knight Gerard van Wezemaal. One of the earliest known vassals, Walterus, Count of Wesele, is documented in 1312.

Throughout the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times, reflecting the turbulent political and social conditions of the region. The oldest surviving parts of the castle date from this period, indicating the original medieval architectural fabric still partially remains. In 1495, ownership transferred to Jan de Glymes, Lord of Bergen op Zoom, and the castle remained under the control of the March of Bergen op Zoom until 1561.

18th-century transformation into a country mansion

The castle's most significant architectural transformation occurred in the 18th century when the Van Susteren family acquired the property. Beginning around 1740, the Antwerp architect JP. van Baurscheit undertook a comprehensive rebuilding project to convert the medieval fortress into a contemporary country mansion.

Van Baurscheit's design notably preserved the original medieval castle structure but replaced the former closed courtyard with an open terrace. This terrace was connected by a stone bridge to the surrounding landscaped park, creating a harmonious transition between the castle and its natural setting. Another bridge on the east side linked the U-shaped bailey to the terrace, enhancing the castle's accessibility and aesthetic appeal. The south facade was the primary focus of the renovation, featuring a more modern and elegant appearance consistent with 18th-century tastes.

In 1774, ownership passed to the widow Isabella Vecquemans de la Vère, who completed the exterior renovations and undertook extensive interior redecorations, further enhancing the castle's status as a refined noble residence.

19th and 20th-century ownership and legacy

Through hereditary succession, the castle came into the possession of the barons Gillès de Pélichy. Members of this family served as mayors of the neighboring village from 1830 to 1929, indicating their local prominence and the castle's continued role in regional affairs. The castle remained a private residence throughout this period.

Following the death of the last baroness Gillès de Pélichy in 1983, the castle was sold in 1984 to Axel Vervoordt, a renowned Antwerp art and antique dealer and collector. Under his ownership, Gravenwezel Castle has become not only a private residence but also a cultural venue, hosting notable guests including members of the Belgian and Dutch royal families as well as international celebrities such as the pop star Sting.

Architectural features and current status

Gravenwezel Castle is an example of a late medieval fortified residence that underwent significant 18th-century renovation to become a country mansion. The castle retains elements of its original medieval architecture, particularly in its oldest sections, while the south facade reflects the 18th-century classical style introduced by van Baurscheit.

The castle's layout includes a U-shaped bailey, a terrace replacing the former courtyard, and stone bridges connecting the main building to the surrounding parkland. These features illustrate the transition from a defensive fortress to a comfortable noble residence integrated with landscaped grounds.

Although the castle was previously open to the public twice a year, it is currently a private residence and not accessible for regular public visits. Visitors who have had the opportunity to see the interiors describe them as beautifully preserved and tastefully decorated, reflecting both the castle's historical significance and the owner's dedication to art and antiques.
