Grabów Castle in Poland is a historically significant late medieval bastioned fortress whose origins trace back to the late 14th century. First documented during the military campaign of King Władysław Jagiełło against Duke Władysław Opolczyk between 1392 and 1396, the castle initially consisted of a wooden tower built on a rectangular plan measuring approximately 9.5 by 8.6 meters, surrounded by an earthen rampart. The northern section of the fortress featured a gatehouse constructed on a stone foundation with a paved entrance, indicating early defensive sophistication.

Early history and foundation

The exact founder of Grabów Castle remains a subject of debate among historians. The prevailing theory attributes its foundation to King Casimir the Great, renowned for his extensive castle-building program throughout Poland. However, some scholars argue that the castle was established by Duke Władysław Opolczyk, who received the Ostrzeszów lands from King Louis I of Hungary around 1375. This duke was known for his vigorous settlement and construction activities in his territories, lending credibility to this claim.

Architectural evolution in the 15th century

Following the incorporation of the Ostrzeszów lands into the Kingdom of Poland, Grabów Castle became the property of the Zaremba family. In the 15th century, the Zarembas undertook significant reconstruction, replacing the original wooden structures with a brick castle built on a stone foundation. The new castle was rectangular, measuring about 40 by 50 meters, and featured brick walls atop a robust stone base. During this renovation, the old wooden buildings were dismantled, and the courtyard level was raised by approximately 2 meters to improve fortification and usability.

16th-century records describe the castle as having four wings enclosing an internal courtyard. Construction was phased, and not all buildings were fully masonry; the oldest section was the northern wing, a two-story structure with a gate passage. The main entrance led through an enclosed outer bailey filled with utility buildings. The castle's location amidst marshy meadows and its surrounding water-filled moat enhanced its defensive capabilities.

Destruction and decline

During the Swedish invasion of Poland known as the "Deluge" (1655-1656), Grabów Castle suffered severe damage inflicted by Swedish forces. It was likely abandoned shortly afterward, leading to its gradual decay. Over time, the castle fell into ruin and was eventually dismantled, leaving no visible above-ground remains of its walls or buildings.

Archaeological findings and current state

Today, the only visible remnant of the castle is an earthen mound located south of the town, surrounded by a moat. Archaeological excavations have confirmed that the castle's foundations remain preserved underground, offering valuable insights into its original layout and construction techniques. These findings contribute to understanding the castle's historical and architectural significance despite its ruined condition.
