Fort Nieulay

Fort Nieulay is a significant military structure located along the Avenue Pierre Coubertin in Calais, France. Its origins trace back to the 12th or 13th century, when the initial sluice gates were installed as part of early water defense systems. These gates were crucial during the English invasion of 1346, allowing defenders to flood surrounding areas and hinder enemy advances. Reconstruction under Louis XIV and Vauban

They ordered a complete rebuilding of Fort Nieulay to enhance its defensive capabilities. This reconstruction was completed by 1679, marking the fort as a prime example of Renaissance military architecture influenced by Vauban's principles. The redesign focused on protecting the bridge of Nieulay, which crossed the Hames River, a vital access point into the town.
