Fort Hoofddijk

Fort Hoofddijk is a modern fortification constructed in 1879 as a key component of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, or "New Dutch Waterline". This defensive line was a strategic military system designed to protect the western part of the Netherlands by deliberately flooding large areas to halt enemy advances. However, due to Utrecht's location on relatively high ground, the city required an additional layer of defense, which led to the creation of Fort Hoofddijk as part of the fort ring encircling Utrecht.
