Its origins trace back to the 12th century during the High Medieval period, making it a castle with deep medieval roots. The castle became the seat of the Ernstbrunn branch of the Counts of Sinzendorf in 1592, marking an important chapter in its history. After the extinction of the Sinzendorf line in 1822, ownership passed to the Köstritz branch of the princely House of Reuss, who maintain it as their main family seat to this day.
