Coppingerstown Castle is located southeast of Midleton in County Cork, Ireland. This castle represents a fragment of the region's architectural heritage from the 17th century Renaissance period. Although detailed historical records are scarce, the castle is believed to have been associated with the Cotter family or the FitzGeralds, two prominent families in Irish history.

Historical background and ownership

The castle's history is closely linked to the Commonwealth period in the mid-17th century. During this time, the head of the Coppingerstown Cotters was William Cotter, son of Edmond, who made Coppingerstown Castle his principal residence. This connection situates the castle within the turbulent political and social changes of 17th-century Ireland, a period marked by shifting land ownership and conflicts influenced by English rule.

Architectural features and condition

Coppingerstown Castle was originally a tower house structure, typical of Irish defensive residences built during the Renaissance period. The remaining structure before its collapse was a four-story corner tower, which suggests a fortified dwelling designed for both defense and habitation. Surrounding the tower were several derelict buildings, indicating a small complex or courtyard associated with the castle.

By the early 21st century, the castle had fallen into a state of significant disrepair. In January 2016, reports confirmed that the remaining tower ruin had collapsed, likely due to severe weather conditions. The ruin was reduced to a pile of rubble approximately three meters high, marking the loss of one of the area's few Renaissance-era tower houses. The site is on private land and is not accessible to the public.
