Cippico Tower

Cippico Tower, locally known as Kula Cippico, stands as a remarkable example of Renaissance-era coastal fortifications in Kaštel Novi, situated in the Split-Dalmatia region of Croatia. Constructed in 1512 by the nobleman Pavao Antun Cippico from Split, this tower was part of a strategic defensive network developed during the turbulent times following the Ottoman Empire's expansion into the Balkans. The tower was erected after Cippico received permission from the Venetian Republic, which controlled Dalmatia and sought to protect its coastal holdings from Ottoman incursions.

Historical context and strategic significance

After the fall of Bosnia to the Ottomans in 1463, the Dalmatian coast became increasingly vulnerable to raids and invasions. The Venetian Republic, which governed the region, collaborated with local landowners, including the Split Archbishopric, monasteries, and nobles from Trogir and Split, to fortify the coastline. This resulted in the construction of 17 fortifications and the fortification of 12 villages along the coast of the Kaštela Bay, a vital maritime corridor between Trogir and Split.

Cippico Tower was one of these critical fortifications designed to protect both the estates of the nobility and the peasants working the land. Its location on a sea rock approximately 100 meters from the shore gave it a commanding position to monitor and defend against naval threats.

Architectural features and design

The tower was originally a freestanding structure, notable for its Renaissance military architectural features. It was topped with machicolations, openings in the parapet that allowed defenders to drop projectiles or boiling substances on attackers below. The tower featured two entrances: a sea gate on the south side and a land gate on the north side. The land gate was accessible via a stone bridge connected to the fortified village on the mainland, enhanced by a drawbridge that added an extra layer of defense.

The tower's walls were inclined at the ground floor, a typical feature designed to deflect cannonballs and resist siege weaponry. This structural detail also contributed to the tower's imposing and sturdy appearance, characteristic of Renaissance fortifications in coastal Dalmatia.

Fortified summer residence and adjoining village

Besides its military function, the tower served as a fortified summer residence for Pavao Antun Cippico. Adjacent to the tower was a fortified village built to house and protect the laborers from the villages below Mount Kozjak. This village was part of the broader defensive strategy, providing a safe haven for local inhabitants during Ottoman raids.

Historical events and changes over time

In 1517, only five years after its construction, the fortified village near Cippico Tower was attacked and looted by Ottoman troops. Despite this, the tower itself withstood the siege and remained unconquered, demonstrating its effective defensive design.

Over the centuries, the natural landscape around the tower changed. The water that once separated the tower from the mainland was gradually filled in, connecting the tower directly to the shore. This alteration diminished the tower's defensive purpose, leading to the removal of its original machicolations.

During the 19th century, the tower came into the possession of the Katalinić family. They adapted the structure for commercial use by constructing a warehouse against the east side of the tower, primarily for wine storage. This change reflects the tower's transition from a military fortification to a functional building integrated into local economic activities.

Current status and accessibility

Today, Cippico Tower remains a significant cultural and historical monument in Kaštel Novi, though it appears to be private property and is not open to public visitation. Its condition reflects the layers of history it has witnessed, from a fortified Renaissance tower to a 19th-century commercial facility.
