One of the most illustrious figures associated with Château d'Estaing is Admiral Charles Henri d’Estaing, renowned for his distinguished service during the American War of Independence. He was the last prominent member of the main Estaing family branch connected to the castle. The upheavals of the French Revolution led to the castle's seizure and sale as national property, though it was reclaimed by Lucie Madeleine d’Estaing in 1793.

In 1836, the castle was purchased by the Sisters of Saint-Joseph, who converted the fortress into a convent and boarding school for girls. This educational and religious function persisted until the year 2000, marking a significant chapter in the castle’s adaptive reuse.

After the Sisters sold the property, it came under municipal ownership before being acquired in 2005 by former French President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing and his relatives. They initiated extensive restoration efforts aimed at preserving the castle's architectural heritage and opening it to the public. The château now hosts cultural events and serves as the headquarters of the Valéry Giscard d’Estaing Foundation, which also houses presidential archives.
