In 1590, the castle changed hands when it was purchased by Martin and Jean de Covet, Lords of la Mure. This included the addition of mullioned windows, which allowed for more light and elegance, marking a shift from purely defensive purposes to residential luxury.

The castle entered a new phase in the 18th century when it came into the possession of the Nicolaus family. Alongside architectural changes, the Nicolaus family established a French formal garden around the castle.
