By the early 13th century, between 1200 and 1257, the Landi family acquired the castle and its surrounding lands. The Landi established the Landi State, a small independent principality that maintained a degree of autonomy throughout the medieval and early modern periods.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Landi State experienced a period of prosperity. They implemented notable civic developments including the minting of their own currency, the establishment of educational institutions, and the creation of a pawn system to support local residents. These initiatives highlight the castle’s role not only as a military stronghold but also as a center of governance and community welfare.

In 1682, control of the castle shifted to the Farnese family, a prominent noble house in Italian history. Later, in the 18th century, ownership passed to the Borbone family. Each transition reflected broader political changes in the region.

Changing roles in the 19th and 20th centuries

Under Maria Luigia of Austria, Duchess of Parma, in the early 19th century, the castle was repurposed as a state prison. It notably housed Carbonari prisoners in 1821, members of a secret society advocating for Italian unification. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, the castle served a humanitarian purpose as a girls’ orphanage, reflecting its ongoing integration into the social fabric of the local community. Following the war, the castle came under the ownership of Marchioness Lina Raimondi Gambarotta, who generously donated it to the municipality of Compiano upon her death in 1987.
