No longer solely military bastions, castles like Castello della Valle were increasingly transformed into noble residences that combined defense with comfort and aesthetic appeal.

The marquis commissioned a comprehensive remodeling of the castle, including the addition of a grand entrance portal inspired by the style of Michelangelo. This portal stands as a rare example of Renaissance architectural influence in a predominantly medieval fortress. New walls and towers were also constructed during this renovation, enhancing both the castle’s defensive capabilities and its residential grandeur.

Siege and damage during the napoleonic wars

The strategic importance of Castello della Valle resurfaced during the early 19th century amid the Napoleonic Wars. Between 1806 and 1807, the castle was besieged by French troops led by General Renyer, who was conducting military campaigns in Calabria. The castle’s defense was commanded by Giovanni Battista de Micheli, vice-president of the Calabria Citra province, who resisted the siege fiercely.

Despite a determined defense, the castle sustained heavy damage from cannon fire, with numerous cannonball impacts still visible on the exterior walls today. The siege ended with the castle’s capitulation on 12 February 1807. This event marked a significant moment in the castle’s history, symbolizing the broader conflicts that shaped southern Italy during this turbulent era.

Modern cultural significance and restoration

In the latter half of the 20th century, Castello della Valle found renewed cultural relevance through the work of local artist Salvatore Fiume. Beginning in the 1970s, Fiume painted murals inside the castle ruins, most notably in the "Room of Wishes". These artworks infused the historic site with contemporary artistic expression, bridging past and present.

During the 1990s, Fiume also created bronze sculptures displayed in the village near panoramic squares overlooking the sea. Due to weathering, these sculptures were later restored and relocated to the town council hall, preserving their connection to the castle and the community.

Recognizing its layered historical and cultural importance, local authorities declared the castle a "Monument Against All Wars" in 2006. This designation highlights both the castle’s role in past military conflicts and its modern symbolic message of peace and reconciliation.

The most intact sections are the underground chambers, which have been restored and are partially accessible to visitors. Visitors can also observe the cannonball scars on the exterior walls, preserved as a tangible reminder of the Napoleonic siege.
