Historical significance and feudal conflicts

During the mid-13th century, Castell de Segur was at the center of a notable legal dispute over land rights and jurisdiction. In 1245, Ponç de Calders contested possession of the estate against the monastery of Santa Maria de l’Estany. The bishop of Vic ruled in favor of Ponç de Calders, restoring several estates to his control. This event underscores the castle's role in the ongoing power struggles between secular nobility and ecclesiastical institutions that characterized medieval Catalonia.

By the late 14th century, specifically around 1380, the castle and its lands had become part of the barony of Segur, governed by the Calders family. Their influence persisted well into the late 15th century, during which they maintained economic ties with religious bodies such as the monastery of Santa Anna de Barcelona. This relationship illustrates the intertwined nature of noble and monastic interests in the region.

Decline and demolition in the early modern period

With the advent of the early 17th century, Castell de Segur lost its strategic and administrative importance. In 1616, the Duke of Alburquerque, then viceroy of Catalonia, ordered the castle's demolition after it was discovered to be a refuge for bandits, including the infamous Pere de Rocaguinarda. This act reflects the shifting political priorities of the period, emphasizing law enforcement and the suppression of outlaw activity over maintaining feudal fortifications.

Throughout subsequent centuries, the title and lands associated with the barony of Segur passed through various noble families via marriage alliances, including the Copons-Calders, Grimau, and Vilallonga families. The baronial title was officially recognized in 1810 by King Ferdinand VII, who granted the title of Baron of Segur to Magi Antoni de Vilallonga i de Grimau. This recognition underscores the enduring legacy of the castle's noble heritage.

Architectural features and remains

The surviving remains of Castell de Segur reveal a fortified complex likely constructed around the 13th century. The castle exhibits a typical square plan fortified by robust defensive walls and corner towers. The use of large ashlar blocks, roughly rectangular dressed stones, reflects medieval construction techniques prioritizing strength and durability.

Towers and walls

One of the best-preserved elements is a northwest corner tower, featuring walls between 1.80 and 2.10 meters thick and an interior width of approximately 3.30 meters. The stone blocks used in this tower measure roughly 25 by 40 centimeters, and the remaining structure stands about 1.20 meters high today. This substantial thickness indicates the defensive purpose of the tower, designed to withstand attacks.

Approximately 11.50 meters south of this tower once stood a larger corner tower with an external diameter near 7 meters. From this tower extends an eastward-facing wall about 11.50 meters long, preserved up to 4 meters in height with a thickness of roughly 1.30 meters. This wall segment emphasizes the castle's formidable defensive perimeter.

Interior vaulted chambers

Within the castle's enclosure, two vaulted chambers have been identified. The larger chamber measures approximately 5.20 meters across, while an adjacent smaller vaulted room is about 2 meters wide. These vaulted spaces likely functioned as storage rooms or protected living quarters, typical of medieval fortresses where secure interior spaces were essential for daily life and defense.

Southern defensive structures

South of the main wall, another defensive structure extends about 13 meters in length and rises to around 2 meters high. Constructed with the same ashlar technique, this wall suggests the fortress's enclosure extended into what is now the modern village of Segur, indicating a sizable fortified area that protected both the castle and its immediate surroundings.

Cultural heritage and preservation status

Despite the absence of formal archaeological excavations, the visible remains of Castell de Segur provide valuable insight into medieval fortification design and feudal society in Catalonia. The site is officially recognized as a Bien Cultural d’Interès Nacional, reflecting its importance in Catalan cultural heritage and history.
