The Castell de Medinyà stands as a notable example of a hill castle located in the municipality of Medinyà in Catalonia, Spain. Its origins date back to the medieval period, reflecting the feudal society of Catalonia through the centuries. The castle's history is intertwined with local noble families and the ecclesiastical authorities of Girona, showcasing a layered narrative of military, social, and architectural evolution.

Early history and medieval origins

The earliest documentary evidence of the site appears in the year 1017, when it was referred to as "Medinianus." By 1089, it was mentioned as "Sancti Saturnini de Mediniano" in the testament of the nobleman Dalmau Vidal. This testament reveals the donation of land at Medinyà to the canonry of the cathedral chapter of Girona, indicating the early influence of the Church in the region. Throughout the 12th century, the Dalmau de Medinyà family emerged as prominent figures associated with the castle. Notably, Guerau de Medinyà served as precentor at Girona cathedral, highlighting the family's religious and social importance.

The xetmar family and feudal lordship

The lordship of the castle passed to the Xetmar family in the early 14th century, who maintained control throughout the 14th and 15th centuries. The Xetmars played an active role in regional politics and military conflicts, including the 1462 Siege of Girona during the Remences War, a significant peasant uprising against feudal oppression. The family consolidated their power by controlling other nearby fortifications such as the castles of Cornellà, Cervià de Ter, Armentera, and Tudela.

Noble privileges and transition to royal domain

By the late 16th century, Ramon Xetmar i de Cardona was granted official noble privileges in Catalonia, cementing the aristocratic status of the family. In 1698, the territory of Medinyà was incorporated into the royal domain. During the early 18th century, the title of Count of Cervià was bestowed upon Ramon Xetmar i Meca by Archduke Charles of Austria, marking a notable elevation in noble rank. The leadership of the estate transitioned from Josep Xetmar i de Pinós to his nephew Josep de Fonsdeviela III, reflecting changes in hereditary succession.

Impact of the spanish civil war and 20th-century restoration

The Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) brought turmoil to the castle, which was occupied by Republican forces and converted into a prison camp holding approximately 1,000 prisoners. This period caused significant damage to the structure and resulted in the loss of valuable archives and historic objects. Following the war, the castle suffered from neglect, structural deterioration including roof collapses, and damage from a severe hailstorm in 1940.

Restoration efforts began in the mid-20th century in two main phases. Initial work focused on repairing and restoring the roof to protect the buildings from further decay. Subsequent renovations included roofing the galleries and updating interior spaces, with landscaping of the grounds completed by 1964. These efforts helped preserve the castle as a historic site, which remains under the ownership of the Fonsdeviela family, holders of the title Marqueses de la Torre.

Architectural features and site layout

The Castell de Medinyà is arranged around a central courtyard within a roughly square compound oriented toward the northeast. Its current appearance reflects layers of architectural changes spanning from the medieval period through the Renaissance and Neoclassical periods, combined with traditional local styles. These successive modifications transformed the original defensive fortress into a grand manor house featuring prominent porticoed galleries on both the exterior and interior, diminishing its original military character.

Medieval remnants and defensive structures

Despite these transformations, several medieval elements survive. The original Romanesque church dedicated to Sant Sadurní, part of the castle complex, was rebuilt in 1763 but retains its historical association with the fortress. Adjacent buildings likely formed the recinte jussà, or lower courtyard. Portions of the medieval defensive walls remain, especially to the southwest and south of the main castle, providing tangible links to its fortified past. The lower part of the church bell tower may also date from this medieval phase.

Near the castle on the hillside, foundations of a circular tower believed to be part of the original defenses were visible until recent times, underscoring the layered construction over centuries. The most significant surviving feature of the upper enclosure, or recinte sobirà, is the circular keep tower located just south of the complex beside the main Gothic entrance gate. This keep is a robust structure approximately seven meters in diameter, with walls up to 2.5 meters thick at the base, comprising two main floors and an attic.

The keep includes a vaulted passage beneath it and a floor with a Gothic window featuring mullions, vertical stone bars dividing the window into sections. These architectural details provide insight into the castle's medieval defensive purpose and craftsmanship, contrasting with the later residential adaptations.

Heritage and current status

Today, the Castell de Medinyà remains a privately owned historic site, preserved by the Fonsdeviela family. It exemplifies the architectural evolution from a fortified medieval stronghold to a noble residence shaped by centuries of historical events and stylistic changes. The castle's blend of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Neoclassical elements offers valuable insights into the region's feudal past and architectural heritage.

The site continues to attract interest for its complex history, surviving medieval structures, and the manor house's elegant galleries. Although not a major tourist destination, its preservation contributes to understanding Catalonia's castle-building traditions and the social transformations of the nobility over time.
