The castle was likely constructed in the mid-16th century and was originally held by the Nagle family, an influential lineage in the region. One of the most prominent figures associated with Carrigacunna Castle was Sir Richard Nagle, who served as Attorney-General to King James II of England during the late 17th century. Following the defeat of James II in 1690, the castle was forfeited and subsequently granted to the Sydney family. Later, ownership passed to the Foott family. By the mid-19th century, specifically around 1847, the castle was no longer inhabited as the owners had relocated to an adjacent early-19th-century residence.

Carrigacunna Castle is characterized by its rectangular plan and five-storey height, typical of Irish tower houses designed for both defense and residence. The castle's location near a cliff-edge adds a natural defensive advantage, overseeing the river below. Although no archaeological evidence has confirmed this tunnel's existence, such stories are common in Irish castle folklore, often symbolizing secret escape routes or clandestine passages used during times of conflict.

Modern status and accessibility

Today, Carrigacunna Castle is part of a private residence and is not open to the public. The castle underwent restoration work in 2018 to preserve its structural integrity and historical character. Despite its private status, the castle has attracted interest due to its historical significance and picturesque location. As of recent reports, the property was listed for sale, offering a rare opportunity to own a piece of Irish heritage.
