Caiazzo Castle

Caiazzo Castle is a medieval fortress built upon the remains of a Roman Arx, strategically located on a hill overlooking the town of Caiazzo and the expansive Volturno Valley in the Campania region of Italy. Its origins trace back to the Lombard era, with significant construction beginning in the 10th century AD. The castle's location and robust fortifications reflect its importance as a defensive stronghold through various historical periods, including Roman, Lombard, Norman, Hohenstaufen, and Angevin rule.

Historical development and ownership

The site originally served as a Roman arx, or citadel, which was repurposed during the Lombard period. Early notable owners included Count Theodoric of Caiazzo in the 9th century and Count Landone in 1034. The castle came under Norman control in the 12th century, when Roger II fortified it with permanent garrisons to secure the region. This period marked significant enhancement of the castle's military capabilities.

In 1229, during the Hohenstaufen dynasty, Caiazzo Castle was besieged by John of Brienne but was successfully defended and freed by Emperor Frederick II, who notably stayed at the castle during this time. The castle's strategic and political importance continued under the Angevin dynasty, during which it changed hands multiple times.

In 1461, the castle was owned by Lucrezia d'Alagno, a noblewoman who undertook significant reinforcement of the walls to withstand the increasing threat of artillery fire, reflecting the evolving nature of warfare in the late medieval period. Later, in 1569, the castle was owned by Matteo di Capua, who hosted the celebrated poet Giovan Battista Marino, indicating the castle's role as a cultural as well as military site.

The Corsi family acquired the castle in 1607, maintaining ownership until the 19th century when Giuseppe Andrea De Angelis purchased it in 1836. A prominent internal staircase connects the castle to the 12th-century church of Santa Maria al Castello, a religious structure that adds to the site's historical depth. The residential quarters were remodeled in the 19th century, reflecting the tastes and needs of that era while preserving key medieval elements.
