Origins and early history

The site originally hosted an earlier fortification known as the Castellaccio, which belonged to the powerful Da Camodeia family. This initial stronghold dates back to at least the 12th century, placing it firmly in the High Medieval era. The fortification was strategically important and was transferred to the Count of Biandrate during this period. However, following the death of the count, the power of his county diminished, leading to the fortification's gradual abandonment and disuse.

Reconstruction and expansion by the Caccia family

In the early 15th century, the influential Caccia family from Novara acquired extensive rights and lands in the region, including the derelict Camodeia fortification. Between approximately 1470 and 1490, the Caccia family undertook a significant rebuilding project, erecting the imposing Caccia Castle upon the ruins of the earlier structure. This new castle was constructed as a fortified complex, reflecting the architectural styles and defensive needs of the late medieval period transitioning into the Renaissance.

The castle remained under the ownership of the Caccia family for several centuries, maintaining its status and function until the abolition of feudalism in the early 19th century.

Architectural features and layout

Today, Caccia Castle presents as a vast and imposing complex of buildings that reflect multiple construction phases spanning from the 15th to the 17th centuries and beyond. The castle’s architecture includes robust defensive walls, towers, and residential quarters typical of a fortified noble residence of its era.
